While we here at HMG have yet to achieve the dream of having our very own TV network, something has come very close. The OldSpice channel on youtube. The handsome new ad campaign for OldSpice features very handsome man, Isaiah Mustafa, engaging in a series of very handsome activities or providing HMG style answers to questions.

We feel that very little HMG commentary is required for this post, instead we’ll allow the Man Your Man Can Smell Like to tell you about a few things that we here at HMG are obsessed with.

If the Wire taught me one thing – it was that both cops and drug dealers can be very very handsome.

The irreverent, boozing, womanizing and utterly irresistable Jimmy McNulty. What makes him good-looking isn’t simply his sinfully good looks, it’s also that he loves his job and although he crosses the boundaries all the time, his heart is in the right place.

Almost too handsome isn’t he? We at HMG generally don’t cotton to cold-hearted drug lords but look at the face – how can you resist? Another HMG characteristic Stringer Bell possesses is that he is constantly educating himself. To paraphrase Omar Little, if he had a briefcase instead of a gun, would the world see him differently?

Ellis Carver is good police and very very good-looking to boot.

This one might be a controversial choice, but I find him quite the eye candy. Yup, Marlo Stanfield, the coldest of the cold but handsome all the same.

While we at hmg appreciate all types of handsomeness, there is one man who truly embodies everything hmg stands for. If we haven’t written about him before, it’s only because the task is so daunting that we wanted to truly capture everything this man represents. Of course, we are talking about Fabio.

Of course, we could talk about the fact that he is the most famous romance cover model of all time. Or the fact that he writes romance novels (albeit with the help of a ghost writer – it is very handsome to recognize your own shortcomings and get help when you need it). That when he was a model in Milan, the clothes didn’t fit him because he was just too big (having a chest that is too large to fit model clothes is a very HMG trait). Or the fact that his face alone killed a bird (is he the new Medusa?). He also has a great sense of humor and joie de vivre that makes him not only handsome on the outside, but handsome on the INSIDE. Two members of HMG have had the privilege of meeting the man (pictured below – although his head looks unusually large, this picture is not photoshopped – what can I say? the man is larger than life! ) and he was so polite and gracious and charming. In addition to that, he had the silkiest hair and a chest that was like a mountain. But enough about that.

In order to fully capture what Fabio means, we asked some trusted people what they felt about Fabio. Here’s what people had to say:

What makes Fabio handsome?

CM: Um, the fact that he is clearly a demigod. Probably the son of Thor, because he’s the Norse god of thunder, and that reminds me of several handsome things such as the word ‘Thigh’, and of course the Thunder from Down Under male burlesque troupe. Another possible father would be Poseidon, as Fabio looks excellant in swimwear, and is often photographed in body oil, which would make him suitable for aquatic living.

Poseidon is the father of horses…enough said.

AH: I think handsomeness tends to occur when someone aims a little higher than the rest and works to take their attributes to the next level. There is nothing particularly “handsome” about having long hair. But there is something wonderful about long hair that seems to be perpetually blown by a gentle wind. Fabio’s chest is another nice example of this idea. A lot of men have muscular chests. But Fabio has a uniquely smooth, extremely broad, sculpted, hairless, and “sun-kissed” chest that is often prominently displayed. Everything about Fabio shows us that he works hard at taking who he is to the next level. And that is handsome.

AR: Fabio epitomizes handsome, because there is nothing about him that isn’t handsome. I think his physical beauty (flowing mane, chiseled face, statuesque body – this list could go on for days) speaks for itself, but his handsomeness goes beyond that. Fabio is handsome because he has used his handsomeness to selflessly give back to others. He has taught other men how to be handsome (see e.g. Mr. Romance, Fabio fitness video etc.), he has brought romance into the lives of all women (romance novels, Fabio After Dark, A Time for Romance), and he cares about animals (he created a cruelty-free valentine’s day for PETA). Finally, Fabio is handsome because his handsomeness brings people together. I cannot count the innumerable bonds I have formed with people based on Fabio. Whereas some peoples handsomeness can be very polarizing (Team Edward v. Team Jacob anyone?), Fabio’s handsomeness is a light that draws us together, out of the dark, cold world that is so often devoid of handsomeness.

MR: I think what makes Fabio handsome is that he is truly himself. With the pervasion of hipster culture, too many things nowadays are “ironic” (mustaches, haircuts, t-shirts) – people tend to define themselves with what they’re not rather than what they are. There is nothing ironic about Fabio’s luscious hair, deep eyes, expansive chest, or the charm that exudes from his every pore. This is not to say that he takes himself seriously. Handsome men who take themselves or their image too seriously often fall into the douchey category (Jude Law, Colin Farrell). Anyone who has seen Mr. Romance or listened to Fabio’s CD knows that this man has a wonderful sense of humor. In a nutshell, there is really nothing more handsome than being yourself (especially if “yourself” is an “Italian Stallion” with perfect bone structure).

AM: While it’s likely true that *everything* about Fabio is special, a few things stand out. In no particular order:

* Sexy – strike that… *ENTICING* accent

* His wild mane, of course

* His statuesque physique

* His alluring pop culture status

* His smile

* His charm and unabashed romanticism

ST/ TT: Wen I firs saw Fabio I cudnt belive ‘ow ‘ansome he woz. He woz a vision. Them strong arm musles, an ‘is perfectly formed ‘amstrings. Need gud ‘amstrings t’fight yu no. ‘elps wiv speed an’ keepin th’enemy on ‘is toes. Ne’er saw anyone as strong a fighter as Fabio, ‘cept Kord o’course (prais’d be ‘is name).

What does Fabio mean to you?

CM: Fabio is the whole package–Great sense of humor, leading expert in romance, Italian, advocate for proper dental hygene, & has a vast motorcycle collection. What more could you ask for? The phrase “God’s gift to women” was originally in reference to Fabio. I don’t know if that is actually true, but how could it not be true?

AH: To me, Fabio represents a feeling. A feeling that can only be described by one word – “home”. Except this home is very large, safe, secure, in a flattering, romantic style, and extravagantly decorated with smooth, reddish countertops, flaxen rugs, and windows on the ceiling that allow the sun to flood in and tan you with its rays (while still protecting you from any large birds flying above).

AR: I think this is best expressed in song.

IMR: Fabio is my personal Jesus, or Yoda or Dalai Lama if you will. I often ask myself “What would Fabio do?” He strives to look his best each day, a lesson which I try to follow. He is charming and full of grace and polite to everyone around him. When I am in a particular fit of road rage or annoyed at a telemarketer, I ask myself “WWFD?” and it’s like an inner glow of peace spread across me.

AM: To me, Fabio is an icon, a paragon, a sort of proto- (or super-)man, a unique and complete embodiment of a woman’s every desire. Those desires being the asterisks above.

The Importance of Being Handsome

We at HMG are sorry we have been absent for so long. We of all people know that you should never left life get in the way of handsomeness. Although we haven’t been writing, we’ve never stopped thinking about handsomeness and we hope to have lots of posts for your reading pleasure in the coming days.

Today, we are very proud to present our very first HMG Handsome Man Profile. Aaron M. is the husband of HMG’s Chair(wo)man of the Board so you can be sure that he is well versed in every aspect of being handsome.

Recently, Aaron decided to take his level of handsomeness up a notch by starting to grow a moustache (pictured above). Why a moustache? Why now? I had the privilege of interviewing him and asking him about this new endeavor:

MR: Why is being handsome important to you?

AM: There are a few reasons:

1) I am married, and I feel handsomeness can keep my wife interested and attracted. A lot of mystery disappears when you’re married (or co-habitate), and things can tend to get pedestrian. You get to know the other’s weird habits; it’s inevitable. Plus, the mystery that can be alluring in a partner tends to disappear; my feeling is that mystery in a marriage (on a regular, dating-esque level) would be pretty exhausting and frustrating. Being handsome, however, will have (I hope) a parallel allure. While I might lose a certain mystique around my wife, I hope that an increase in handsomeness will excite her.

2) I like to try new things. I was a late bloomer, and I never bothered to cultivate any personal aesthetics until late college (maybe 7 years ago). In the last few years of working and surviving, I’ve definitely let my physical appearance get a bit lax. I am excited to recapture a sense of having a personal aesthetic, and to make that aesthetic a handsome one. Essentially: I’ve never tried to be “handsome” before, and I’m excited to see how it will be!

3) There was a more attractive time in my life when I enjoyed getting checked out. it’s a bit cheap, and I probably did tend to peacock a bit, but I won’t lie to you – it’s nice to walk down the street or go shopping and feel attractive. It just makes the day sunnier.

MR: What inspired you to grow a moustache?

AM: In the course of “handsome” discussions that often happen around my wife and her friends, the subject of handsome mustaches came up. Specifically Michael Cera’s mustache as “Francois” in “Youth in Revolt.” I was surprised to hear this – I personally thought the mustache in question was meant to be a little silly. I actually thought that *ALL* mustaches were a little silly.

So I got to thinking about it, and I decided: it must look good to SOMEONE! I further decided that it might be possible to sport an attractive mustache. I had never, ever considered a mustache ‘attractive’ before; I decided that the opportunity to learn what makes a mustache handsome and to grow one could only make me happy, and, really, all it would take was time, grooming, references, and thought. Afterward: the knowledge of a handsome mustache would mine, a treasure to carry with me for all time. As they say: “Give a man a mustache, and he might be handsome, but TEACH a man to mustache, and he –” … Wait… How does that go?

MR: Who are your moustache heroes?

AM: I did not have any mustache heroes when I began this, and I am currently using Burt Reynolds and Michael Cera as kinds of “ends of the spectrum” examples of what to do. I want to avoid elaborate, silly ‘staches, or a Hitler mustache; otherwise, sky’s the limit. I figure that my optimal mustache will have many factors; my face, my mustache hair (color, density, shape, etc.), my personal feelings, and the reactions of people around me. I am just growing at the moment; shaping and discerning will come around.

MR: How much more handsome do you expect to look with your moustache (same, 1.5x, 2x, etc)?

AM: Well, now, this is a hell of a question!!! Particularly in light of the question above – I’m not sure what mustache I will have… Time for the mirror…

… I have consulted the mirror. I believe I will be 1.666X more handsome with mustache. I will increase my handsomeness by 2/3rds! It is surprising, upon reflection! Let it be known.

Handsome Halloween

While we here at HMG believe that everyday should be a handsome day, we find that Halloween is a good gateway drug for those whose are too shy to let their inner handsomeness shine on a daily basis. It’s a sad day for us at HMG when a man ignores his handsomeness potential in his daily wear, but Halloween is often a particularly disappointing day for us. So, to help, here is a list of HMG approved Halloween costume ideas.

Handsome Habit: Waxing

It’s not easy being handsome. Sometimes it takes a bit of work. We here at HMG believe that a little hard work never hurt anyone, especially if the work results in increased handsomeness. One such habit is man-waxing. HMG encourages regular waxing, trimming and manscaping.

To quote Fabio, “Back hair will get you nowhere…show her what’s underneath…smooth & molto sexy.” (To watch Fabio demonstrate this concept himself, watch from 22 seconds onwards:

Handsome-man Hall of Fame member, Bruno, believes that waxing is so important that it made his essential A-Z guide for fashion: “V is for… VAXING. Hair removal und manscaping ist essential. Be careful if you do it yourself, though – yesterday ich tried to self-wax mein arschenhaller und glued meinself to ze bed.”

Bruno also brings up an excellent point; more often than not waxing is best left to the professionals (or to an experienced and enthusiastic friend who wants to help). We at HMG are in awe of the woman who operates “ted e bare.” HMG was informed of her dedication to the cause of hair-free men by our own waxer extraordinaire, Marisa. She’s so dedicated to the cause that she’s even managed to procure the domain www.manzillian.com. While she may not be able to service all the handsome men out there in the world, her FAQ provides very useful information to help assuage any doubts that men just short of achieving their full handsome potential may have.

So go on men, don’t let a little (or a lot) of hair stand between you and fully handsome self.

Skin is In

We were at a bar one night with a group of our friends, amidst a gaggle of scantily clad women who didn’t seem to like us very much (um, weird? We are so cute!). And suddenly our man-friend walks in, wearing a blue and white striped DEEP V-NECK tee under a SHEER white collared button down shirt. Suddenly, he is surrounded by hungry women. They oooh. They aaah. They start touching him. They maniacally unbutton his shirt in an attempt to reveal the little morsel underneath. Every time they see him after that, they inquire about that shirt. Secret: women love the deep v’s. Now you know. Some of us have even started wearing them ourselves to emulate the handsomeness (okay, one of us).
